چکیده

D I F F E R E N T crosses involving the same marked region in Neurospora crassa may yield markedly different frequencies of recombinants. It has been suggested that the fluctuations in recombination frequency result from inherent differences between the various wild-type strains from which the stocks descended (BARRATT 1954; FROST 1961). However, the nature of these differences and the ways in which they may influence the crossing-over process remain unknown. The present report deals with experiments designed to pursue the following questions about genetic factors which influence the frequency of crossing-over: ( 1 ) Are factors at a single genetic locus responsible for these effects? (2) Is the frequency of crossing-over influenced by the presence of particular

Double Crossing over in Neurospora.

CROSSOVER involves exchange of genetic material between only two of the A four products of meiosis. We should like to know whether there are any special properties of these two strands of the tetrad which enable them to participate in crossing over. Such knowledge might help us understand the mechanics of the crossing over process and would perhaps shed some light on the physical nature of the ...

A reaction-diffusion model for interference in meiotic crossing over.

One crossover point between a pair of homologous chromosomes in meiosis appears to interfere with occurrence of another in the neighborhood. It has been revealed that Drosophila and Neurospora, in spite of their large difference in the frequency of crossover points, show very similar plots of coincidence-a measure of the interference-against the genetic distance of the interval, defined as one-...

Gene conversion alone accounts for more than 90% of recombination events at the am locus of Neurospora crassa.

We have used closely flanking molecular markers located approximately 4 kb distal and 6 kb proximal of the am locus to investigate the incidence of crossover events associated with the generation of prototrophic recombinants in a cross heteroallelic am1 am6. Ninety-three percent of prototrophs were generated by events that did not recombine the molecular markers, indicating that simple conversi...

Unstable diploids of Neurospora and a model for their somatic behavior.

When ascospores from crosses of certain strains were germinated under conditions selective for heterozygosity of complementing markers on one linkage group, a portion of the resulting colonies were also heterozygous for unselected markers on other chromosomes, implying multiple disomy. The frequency of disomy and the pattern of marker homozygosity are consistent with most or all multiple disomi...

Non-Random Crossing over in the Second Chromosome of Neurospora Crassa.

YTOLOGICAL analysis (LINDEGREN and RUMANN, in press) has C shown that Neurospora crassa probably contains nine chromosomes. These chromosomes were found to contain respectively, 29, 18, 13, 9, 5 , 3, 3, 2, and I chromomeres; but since they were not completely uncoiled, the number of ultimate chromomeres is probably at least twice as great. They are certainly the smallest chromosomes in which cr...
